The Hex Valley Golf Club was founded on the 7th of August 1992 by a couple of farmers, who decided to build a golf course in De Doorns. The idea of building a golf club in the Hex, was a far fetched concept, but Niël Jordaan, Gideon Meissenheimer and Patrick Bettesworth, started negotiations with the De Doorns Municipality early 1989. Almost a year and many steering committee gatherings went by before the the final go-ahead was giving in 1990. At the time, very little funds were available, affordable and sustainable water for irrigation and enough land, was only a couple of the problems they had to face. The steering committee and their wives sold potjiekos tickets, hotdogs and even held a “cowboy” ball to generate funds to start the project that were described by some pessimistic onlookers as “a baby born dead“! After Francois Malherbe designed the golf course, the people of the Hex River Valley stood together and did the work themselves (as always!). Farmers and farm workers all joined forces and finished the golf course early 1991 – they eventually saved 50% on the projected cost! Today, the Hex Valley Golf Club is one of the most beautiful 9 hole golf courses in the Boland and with a membership of nearly 200 affiliated members! Many organizations, like Huis Mimosa (house for the elderly), the Hex Valley High School as well as the Hexrivier Opvoedkundige Sentrum, use our facilities to generate funds of their own – in short; we serve our community!
