A baby born dead?

That is what the doubters called it. Three farmers, one valley and a golf course built by hand.

A far-fetched idea

A golf club in the Hex was a far-fetched idea. But early in 1989 three farmers, Niël Jordaan, Gideon Meissenheimer and Patrick Bettesworth, opened talks with the De Doorns Municipality.

Almost a year of steering-committee meetings followed before the final go-ahead came in 1990.

Potjiekos, hotdogs and a cowboy ball

There was very little money, and not enough water or land. The steering committee and their wives sold potjiekos tickets and hotdogs, and even held a cowboy ball to raise the funds to start.

Some pessimistic onlookers called the project a baby born dead.

The valley builds it

François Malherbe designed the course. Then the people of the Hex River Valley stood together and did the work themselves, as they always have. Farmers and farm workers joined forces and finished the course early in 1991.

They built it for half of the projected cost.

7 August 1992

Hex Valley Golf Club was founded on 7 August 1992.

Today it is one of the most beautiful nine-hole courses in the Boland, with nearly 200 affiliated members. Huis Mimosa, Hex Valley High School and the Hexrivier Opvoedkundige Sentrum use the club to raise funds of their own. In short: the club serves its community.
